Thruxton BSB: Better gearing gives Brookes the winning edge

Race two winner Josh Brookes says he was relieved to claw back valuable championship points after gearing changes helped steer him to victory.

The Aussie celebrated his 39th British Superbike win and his eighth at the Hampshire track as he took the honours in the second race of the day.

And although it looked like a relatively seamless win for the McAMS Yamaha rider, he admitted that the weekend on the whole had been tough.

“It’s actually been a difficult weekend for us, we often expect to ride and race well here and sometimes it’s a bad move to expect things,” he said.

“We played our cards a bit wrong in race one, we were too short geared. The wind was behind us today in the last run to the final chicane and in race one I was just running out of top speed.

“The bike was on the rev limiter and people were overtaking me just at that end into the chicane all the time so that sort of broke up my race and I couldn’t get a rhythm.

“But in race two we put a longer gearing on to give it a bit more top speed and I had to sort of manage it a little bit better in the corners but the combined package was a better compromise.

“I’m just thrilled now that again McAMS Yamaha can celebrate another victory and it’s so important for these points, I’m desperate to claw back some points on Leon and that’s what we need to do week in, week out.”

After the win – his third in four races – Brookes was also able to finally put his botched burn-out demons from 2015 to rest as he showed how it was really done, although he admitted to erring on the side of caution.

“I was very cautious with the burn out, I was very nervous all the way until I came to a standstill,” he added.
