Thruxton BSB: ‘To get Smiths first win is brilliant’ – Hickman

Smiths Racing’s Peter Hickman is going away from the seventh round of the MCE British Superbike championship at Thruxton one very happy rider this evening.

It was a day of firsts for the S1000RR racer, and for his Smiths BMW team. In the final race he stormed to victory, and cemented the team’s maiden BSB win. He also started the race on pole and clinched the debut front row start for the team this season too.

In race one Hickman bagged his first podium of the year, with a second place finish and then went one better after he took advantage of a crashing Josh Brookes.  Tyre life has never proved problematic for the road racing star this weekend, and felt really comfortable on the SC2 front and SC0 rear Pirelli’s.

With his 100 percent podium success record today, Hickman is now third in the overall standings on a total of 164 points. Now he is on his way to the Ulster GP.

“It is brilliant and a mega job by the team and I wouldn’t be here without them, the bike is so, so good. I knew if I could keep doing 15’5’s it was good,” said Hickman, speaking at the circuit.

“Shakey then came through and he dropped in to the 16’s and as soon as he did that I had to get past. I knew I could do 15’5’s all day long. The bike is awesome. To get Smiths first win ever is brilliant and we had a first pole position and first row and it has been an awesome weekend.”

After his first podium finish of the day Hickman added: “I was out in front for a fair bit being the pace setter and I was watching the dash and I knew I could do mid 1’15’s for a good 15-16 laps and that is without the safety car so I thought I would sit there and when Josh came through I thought perfect I will sit there for a little bit. Then Josh got away a little bit too far and then me and Jake passed each other a few times and after that it was all over. Just really happy for the Smiths team and for this podium.”
