The Aragon and San Marino Grands Prix were disastrous for Aprilia as the Italian manufacturer scored 16 points across the two races.
Aprilia had another disappointing MotoGP weekend last week at the San Marino Grand Prix. Coming to Misano the Italian manufacturer was hopeful after their disastrous time at Aragon, where their best result was a 10th-place finish.
However, just like in Aragon, it was a difficult weekend once again for Aprilia. The weekend started with only Maverick Vinales getting into Q2 and qualifying in 11th place. It was a very similar story in the race as Miguel Oliveira was the top Aprilia rider in 11th.
Aprilia's weekend went from bad to worse when Aleix Espargaro and Vinales both decided to pit when the rain briefly fell. After Espargaro switched to his wet weather tyres he ultimately retired from the Grand Prix.
“Two very disappointing weekends,” Espargaro said. “I’m a little bit sad, because apart from the result of (the grand prix); we took a gamble, I pitted in to take the rain tyres and it didn’t work.
“But this can happen. Apart from that, I was never competitive during the weekend. I was never competitive after the rain also in Aragon on Saturday and Sunday. So, the last couple of rounds we miss something and it’s frustrating. But it is how it it is. It’s not easy.”
Over on Vinales' side of the garage, he did finish the race after reverting back to his dry setup Aprilia. However, he finished outside of the points in 16th place, a lap down on the leading riders.
“I started the race with the medium rear tyre and I needed more laps to get the tyre up to temperature,” Vinales, who finished a lapped 16th, explained.
“But it started to rain and my feeling was very bad on the bike. So, I saw more and more rain was coming and I decided to pit in based on the feelings.
“As soon as I go out and did just one lap, then I was forced to go in and change to the dry tyres. Then I had a good rhythm, to be honest, but we tried.”
