Diogo Moreira has made history by becoming the first Brazilian rider to achieve a Moto2 World Championship pole position after smashing the lap record en route to the top spot in Aragon Moto2 qualifying.
Fresh from a career-best second place finish last time out at Silverstone, Moreira was in fine form over a single lap as he waited until the very final seconds to clock a 1m 49.940secs.
The first time a Moto2 machine has broken the 1m 50secs marker, Moreira's hopes of converting pole into a maiden victory was helped along by pre-race favourite and championship leader Manuel González failing to set a time.
The Spaniard - who comes into the race with a slim three-point margin over Aron Canet - slapped down on his first flyer at Turn 7 moments after getting frustrated at a large group of riders slowing behind to catch his slipstream on the out-lap.
The mistake could prove costly for Gonzalez as he faces an uphill task to claw back ground from 18th on the grid, not least because closest rival Aron Canet is comparatively well placed up in fourth place.
Even so, the front row is made up of riders yet to taste the winners' champagne in Moto2 with Barry Baltus making good on using Moreira as a reference ahead to put his Fantic Racing machine in second place, while Deniz Öncü converted his strong practice pace in a fine third.
Behind Canet, CFMoto Aspar rookies Daniel Holgado and David Alonso will hope to pose a threat to the leaders from fifth and sixth, while Filip Salac will be satisfied with seventh having progressed from Q1 despite a crash.
Zonta van den Goorbergh was a late improver as he prepares to go from eighth, ahead of Joe Roberts and Alonso Lopez.
Mercifully for Gonzalez, while Canet is up at the front, his other closest title rival - Jake Dixon - won't be much further up the road as the Briton, who was a dominant winner at Aragon last year, could only manage 14th as the Boscoscuro chassis struggles against its Kalex counterpart.
