Mattia Casadei notches up his second MotoE World Championship win in succession after capitalising on title contender Matteo Ferrari throwing away a crucial victory in race one at Spielberg.

Ferrari came into the sixth round of eight chasing down a 15 point deficit to Jordi Torres in the overall standings, but looked on course to wipe that out after working his way to the front of the field in the first of two races to be held in the Styrian hills.

However, having dispatched of Casadei with three laps to go, Ferrari lost the front end of his Gresini Ducati coming around Turn 7 at the final time of asking, skating into the gravel trap and out of contention.

Costing him a maximum 25 points, had Ferrari held firm then it would have put him on level pegging with Torres with five races of the season remaining. Instead, fifth place for the Spaniard means he has extended his lead to 26 points.

Ferrari's disappointment was joy for Casadei, who completed a redemptive victory 12 months after he also crashed out of the lead with just a few corners remaining.

Behind him, Eric Granado and Kevin Zannoni picked up the pieces for the final podium spots in second and third, the latter landing only his second career MotoE podium having started from a maiden pole position.

Hector Garzo came through to fourth place, ahead of the fortunate Torres, while Miquel Pons recovered to sixth despite a long-lap penalty that arguably cost him a shot at the podium.

Alessandro Vaccine came from the back of the grid to finish in seventh place, ahead of Mika Perez, who scored his best MotoE result for RNF Racing in eighth.
