Ivan Ortola has secured the first Moto3 World Championship pole position of his career at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya after shaking out on top in a frantic end to the Q2 session.

The Angeluss MTA racer suffered a crash this morning during third and final Practice but was in strong form again in the crucial Q2 session to turn in a 1m 48.205secs lap, just over +0.3s quicker than the competition.

Deniz Oncu, a winner last time out in Austria, will start second on the grid on the Red Bull KTM Ajo, while Aussie Joel Kelso joins them on the front row after one of his best qualifying performances of the season on the PruestelGP CFMoto.

Jose Antonio Rueda secured honours as the highest-placed rookie rider on the factory Red Bull KTM Ajo, a mantle many expected to go to Colin Veijer, only for the Dutchman - who was quickest in P3 - to crash at Turn 5.

He’s joined on row three by Stefano Nepa and Kaito Toba, with Riccardo Rossi completing the top ten.

Having made it through from Q1, championship leader Daniel Holgado has work to do from 11th place, though he does start ahead of his main rival Ayumu Sasaki, who could only manage 13th.

Of the Brits, Scott Ogden successfully squeezed through Q1 at the expense of Diogo Moreira, the VisionTrack Racing Honda rider going on to qualify in 16th place. Josh Whatley starts 28th.
