David Alonso maintained his place at the head of the timesheets ahead of qualifying for the 2024 Moto3 Grand Prix of The Americas after smashing the existing lap record in Practice 2.

Having held the overnight advantage following Friday's Practice 1, Alonso stepped up his pace in Practice 2 with a string of quick laps below 2m 15secs.

Among them was a session-topping best effort of 2m 14.153secs, which both lowered Aron Canet's erstwhile record from 2017 and earned him a 0.4s margin over his closest rival, Joel Kelso.

The Australian ended the session in second position, though his lap time was matched by 2023 winner Ivan Ortola in third place.

Daniel Holgado left it late to leapfrog up the order to go safe in fourth place, ahead of David Muñoz and Angel Piqueras, the Leopard Racing rookie maintaining his impressive Friday form to end P2 inside the top six.

Jose Antonio Rueda held down seventh place, ahead of Tatsuki Suzuki on the best of the IntactGP Husqvarnas, with Matteo Bertelle and Taiyo Furusato completing the top ten.

Elsewhere, Scott Ogden eased directly into Q2 with the 12th fastest time, but Josh Whatley will have to go again in Q1 after going 23rd.
