Maverick Vinales tops Valencia test as Marc Marquez makes Gresini Ducati debut

Maverick Vinales emerged quickest on day one of the official post-season MotoGP test at Valencia as those switching to new teams - including Marc Marquez, Luca Marini and Fabio di Giannantonio - made their official debut in fresh colours.

Two days on from the conclusion of the 2023 MotoGP season, the riders were back on course to bring an official end to the year with Vinales setting the pace with a 1m 29.253secs lap.

However, it was the new faces in new places making the headlines, most notably Marc Marquez, who formally began his new chapter with the Gresini Racing MotoGP team in style with the fourth fastest lap, ahead of team-mate and brother Alex.

Riding high on the timesheets for much of the day, Marquez would end the session behind only Vinales, Brad Binder - despite the factory KTM rider suffering a crash at Turn 5 - and Marco Bezzecchi in third place on the Mooney VR46 Racing Ducati.

Though his future remains unclear following the decision by the FIM to expel RNF Racing from the MotoGP grid for 'repeated infractions and breaches of the Participation Agreement affecting the public image of MotoGP', Raul Fernandez got his head down to post the fifth fastest time on his privateer Aprilia.

Elsewhere, Fabio di Giannantonio made an encouraging start to life at VR46 Racing by posting the seventh fastest time, ahead of Enea Bastianini and Jack Miller, while new Repsol Honda signing Luca Marini got his new role underway strongly as the fastest RC213V rider in tenth.

Further back, Pedro Acosta made a solid MotoGP debut aboard the GasGas-branded KTM RC16, posting the 18th fastest time out of the 23 runners.
