MotoGP Shakedown Test | Who to expect on track this weekend

Gold & Goose

This week some of the MotoGP riders will begin their 2025 testing schedule at the Sepang Shakedown Test. But who will be on track for the five manufacturers?

The first MotoGP Test of 2025 is right around the corner as the Sepang Shakedown Test will begin on Friday the 31st of January. However, the Shakedown Test does not feature the entire MotoGP grid across the three days of testing.

So, who will be taking to the Sepang International Circuit this weekend?

Ducati:

Let's start with the reigning Champions, Ducati will have a very limited entry of two riders across the three days.

Michele Pirro will continue to test the Ducati GP25 at the Shakedown Test before Francesco Bagnaia, Marc Marquez and Fabio di Giannantonio get their hands on it next week.

Fermin Aldeguer is the only other rider on track for the Italian manufacturer. The rookie Gresini Racing rider will get three extra days of riding on his Ducati GP24 before he is joined by Alex Marquez in the satellite Ducati garage.

Aprilia:

Don't get too excited Aprilia fans we will not be seeing Jorge Martin on track with the #1 plate this weekend. Like their fellow Italian manufacturer, Aprilia will only have two riders on track for the first three days.

Lorenzo Savadori will continue his testing duties for the Noale manufacturer and will prepare the 2025 RS-GP for Jorge Martin, Marco Bezzecchi and Raul Fernandez.

Ai Ogura will fly the flag for Trackhouse Racing this weekend as the rookie will also be on track. The Japanese rider will get his first taste of the 2025 RS-GP after testing an older specification in Barcelona.

KTM:

Despite having four elite riders across their two teams in 2025 none of the factory KTM riders will be on track this weekend.

Dani Pedrosa will return to track action after a long break away from the mainstream races and tests. Despite rumours that his job was at risk due to KTM's financial crisis, he will continue his testing duties.

Pol Espargaro is the second KTM Factory Racing Test Rider and will join Pedrosa for the Shakedown Test. The Spaniard was present at the Misano Test in 2024 and will get another run out on the 2025 RC16.

Yamaha:

This is where it starts to get interesting... Yamaha has no rookies and two Test Riders. However, due to its D-level concessions, the Japanese manufacturer could field all four of its factory riders. But let's start with who we know will be on track across all three days.

Augusto Fernandez joined Yamaha as a Test Rider after being let go by KTM at the end of 2024. The Spaniard has not tested the Yamaha M1 at all so his first laps will come this weekend in Sepang.

The Monster Energy Yamaha and Prima Pramac Yamaha Factory Racing launches will take place this Friday. Due to this, it seems logical that Fabio Quartararo, Alex Rins, Miguel Oliveira and Jack Miller will not participate in at least Day One of the Shakedown Test.

Cal Crutchlow's participation in the Shakedown Test is unknown at this point in time.

Honda:

Just like its fellow Japanese manufacturer Honda is in a unique position when compared to the European manufacturers.

Aleix Espargaro has already been hard at work in his first few months as a Honda Test Rider. The Spaniard took part in the Barcelona Test and then private tests in Jerez and Thailand. He will now continue his testing duties in Sepang.

Takaaki Nakagami will also be on-site to continue developing the RC213V ahead of the 2025 season. The Japanese rider has also been putting in work as he completed private tests in Malaysia and Thailand.

Stefan Bradl, the veteran in the Honda camp, will not be at the Sepang Test.

The Honda HRC riders of Joan Mir and Luca Marini could take part in the Shakedown Test. However, their team's launch will take place on the 1st of February in Indonesia. Due to this schedule clash, it is easy to assume that they will not be on track for the first test.

LCR Honda will field their MotoGP rookie, Somkiat Chantra during the Shakedown Test. The Thai rider got his first experience on the Honda in Barcelona but will get updated parts in Malaysia.

Johann Zarco's involvement is also unknown, due to a limited amount of tyres for testing it seems unlikely that the French rider will put in too many laps if he does test this weekend.
