'We have found a good base' - Honda ends the Sepang Test on a positive note

Gold & Goose

Romano Albesiano discusses the 'huge amount of work' that Honda has done throughout the offseason and the Sepang Test.

Honda has been in a downward spiral in recent years in MotoGP. However, the Japanese manufacturer has pulled out all the stops for the 2025 MotoGP season.

The Honda test team has been given a new lease of life after Aleix Espargaro and Takaaki Nakagami took over the development of the RC213V. But the signing of Romano Albesiano as their new Technical Director might have been Honda's biggest move.

Albesiano made his first public HRC appearance at the Sepang Test and spoke to MotoGP.com during the final day about how the test had gone.

"It has been a very important test, we had many different versions of components," Albesiano began.

"It has been a huge [amount of] work for the mechanics and the riders, but in the end, we found a good base for the start of the season."

Albesiano was asked if there is a new sense of 'optimism' in HRC after the Sepang Test, to which he said:

"Yes, definitely. I did not know what to expect from this test. But my feeling now is the general performance of the motorcycle and the riders is good.

"We have a base to start and we can bring small developments step by step, which is the right way to proceed. We are there and we can get to the top in some time, but it is possible."

'If we can get the best from both we can create a fantastic mixture' - Albesiano.

Having previously worked for Aprilia Racing Honda's new Technical Director has had the chance to experience the European and Japanese approach to MotoGP.

Although the Italian would not say which way is 'better' he believes elements from both sides would create a 'fantastic mixture'.

"The approach to racing and development is different between the European companies and the Japanese companies," Albesiano stated.

"I am not saying one is right and one is wrong, I think if we can get the best from both we can create a fantastic mixture for the future."

The main area where Honda has focussed during the offseason has been with their engine. It is clear that the manufacturer has made a step, but there is more to be done to find better 'pure performance'.

"The engine is one area where the guys at Honda have done great work to find better connection, which was a good step for the riders," Albesiano concluded. "Now we must look for more pure performance, which is something that we slightly miss."
