First, a little disclaimer… truthfully, there is a strong argument for making any one of the three remaining riders in our poll a number one. We even dabbled with the notion of a joint top spot, but, well… no.
So here in third we have this year’s runner-up, Glenn Irwin.
Much like team-mate, champion and ‘frenemy-rival’ Tommy Bridewell, this was the year everything came together for Irwin, a year where the flashes of fine form extended for the duration of the season.
While quitting Honda in favour of a return to Paul Bird Motorsport and Ducati machinery posed a risk on paper, Irwin benefitted from more familiar, family-orientated surroundings which he repaid with a level of determination and focus never previously demonstrated.
No rider won more races over the course of the year and when Irwin was out front he was difficult to reel back in.
However, his ten wins were reined in by four DNFs, which offset one another into the paltry 0.5-point margin that separated him from Bridewell at the end of the season.
Arguments about his double DNF at the hands of Bridewell notwithstanding, it was his personal errors at Donington Park and Knockhill earlier in the season that left him playing catch up for the remainder of the year.
Regardless, much like the title race itself, here there really is nothing in it…
