Pedro Acosta got the better of Moto2 title rival Tony Arbolino in the dash for pole position during qualifying for the German Moto2 at the Sachsenring.

The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider put talk of his future to the back of his mind to come on strong in the latter stages of the session, the Spaniard having had a fast time early on cancelled for track limits.

Hitting the front with just over three minutes remaining with 1m 24.052s lap - which would have been good enough for pole - the Spaniard proceeded to put the top spot further out of his rivals' reach by peaking with a 1m 23.858secs best.

That was enough to see off series leader Arbolino, the Italian nonetheless enjoying his strongest qualifying session of the season on the Marc VDS bike to secure a spot in the middle of the front row.

The feuding championship contenders will be joined up front by Jake Dixon, who ensured the front row mirrored the top three from Mugello a week earlier by taking third on the grid.

Despite feeling the effects of crashes both last week at Mugello and in Friday Practice, Aron Canet bounced back to secure fourth on the grid, leading a second row that will also include Alonso Lopez and his Mugello sparring partner, Sam Lowes.

Seeking a return to form this weekend following a few disappointing weekends, Somkiat Chantra made the most of his Q1 track time to get seventh in Q2, ahead of Fermin Aldeguer and Albert Arenas, while Sergio Garcia completed the top ten.

Elsewhere, Filip Salac's strong run of qualifying results came to an end when he became the latest victim of the tricky Turn 1 right-hander, the Gresini man starting down in 13th.
