Pedro Acosta heads into qualifying for Round 6 of the 2023 Moto2 World Championship as the hot favourite for pole position in the Italian Moto2 after breaking the lap record in final practice at Mugello.
Fastest in Friday Practice too, Acosta kept his rivals at bay in the quick Saturday morning session, putting two tenths between himself and the competition, while his 1m 50.514 represented a new lap record too.
He was chased by Fermin Aldeguer, the Speed Up rider popping up late on, while Jake Dixon survived the Q2 cut with a surge up the order on the GasGas Aspar late on to third.
Fresh from scoring the second podium of his Moto2 career last time out in France, Filip Salac was fourth best on the QJMOTOR Gresini, as Sam Lowes rounded out the top five despite suffering with a bout of ill health.
Elsewhere, Moto2 Championship leader Tony Arbolino left it late to haul himself out of the bottom reaches of the top twenty to safely secure his Q2 passage in seventh, while Mattia Pasini - a wild-card this weekend with the Fieten Olie team - proved something of an interloper by reaching Q2 automatically, unlike team-mates Barry Baltus and Zonta van den Goorbergh.
Rory Skinner's eventful weekend continued with a nasty accident towards the end of the P3 session.
After causing P2's red flag when an off led to his bike continuing upright for a stretch before spiralling back onto the circuit, Skinner was already feeling the effects of the smash when he was struck by an errant Jeremy Alcoba at Turn 4, whose attempt to slip up the inside resulted in a front-end washout.
Clearly catching Skinner unawares, the awkward landing on his feet means he has been taken to the medical centre for further checks.
