Moto3 Germany, Race: Alonso Takes Sixth Win After Veijer Crashes Out

Gold and Goose

Moto3 Germany is the ninth round of 2024, with David Alonso leading the championship after round eight in Assen last weekend. David Alonso took his sixth win from nine races in 2024, after Collin Veijer crashed from the lead on lap two.

Race

David Alonso was victorious in the Moto3 German Grand Prix, the Colombian securing his sixth win of the season, extending his championship lead to 64 points ahead of the summer break.

Collin Veijer made the holeshot, but the real flyer off the line was David Munoz, who was second from sixth by turn three. He then inherited the lead when Veijer crashed at turn 11 on lap two, but swiftly handed it to Alonso when he ran wide at turn one on lap four.

The large number of long-lap penalties that were handed out after practice on Friday meant that early on the group was broken up, and by lap four it was down to a 22-wheeler. Riders left and joined the group throughout the race, but finally the top seven broke away on lap 18, and then they split on lap 20 leaving the top four to decide victory. Then, Jose Antonio Rueda’s KTM locked up at turn one on the penultimate lap at the first corner, leaving just Taiyo Furusato and Ivan Ortola to challenge Alonso.

Furusato was close enough to attack on the final lap, but made a mistake in turns nine and 10 that left him too far behind to try to pass in either turn 12 or turn 13.

Alonso took his sixth win of the season, ahead of a disappointed Furusato whose career remains winless, and Ortola whose podium run now extends to four races: the #48 hasn’t missed the rostrum since France.

Behind, the Leopard Racing duo of Adrian Fernandez and Angel Piqueras were in podium contention until the final breakaway, and ended up fourth and fifth, respectively, over two seconds off the win. Then came Ryusei Yamanaka in sixth, ahead of Dani Holgado, David Munoz, Tatsuki Suzuki, and Scott Ogden who completed the top 10.

Collin Veijer remounted after his turn 11 crash and finished 19th.

Qualifying

Collin Veijer secured pole position for the Moto3 German Grand Prix in what was looking to be a tight qualifying session until the Dutchman's final attempt.

Veijer became the first rider to lap Sachsenring on a Moto3 bike in under 1:25, putting him over 0.3 seconds ahead of David Alonso in second place. At one point in Q2, the front row was covered by 0.003 seconds, but Veijer ended up topping it by 0.336 seconds. Luca Lunetta, though, was only 0.001 seconds slower than Alonso in third place.

Adrian Fernandez was fourth, ahead of Jose Antonio Rueda who was arguably blocked by Fernandez at turn 11 on his best lap.

David Munoz completed the top six, ahead of Scott Ogden in seventh, while Taiyo Furusato and Tatsuki Suzuki were eighth and ninth, respectively. Stefano Nepa rounded out the qualifying top 10.

A swathe of penalties handed out by the MotoGP Stewards after practice for Moto3 saw four riders receive pit lane start penalties for riding on the line: Matteo Bertelle, Joel Esteban, Josh Whatley, and Filippo Farioli. Additionally, Tatchikorn Buasri, Nicola Carraro, Riccardo Rossi, Luca Lunetta, and Xabi Zurutuza received double-long-lap penalties; Ryusei Yamanaka, David Almansa, Ivan Ortola, and Stefano Nepa were awarded single-long-lap penalties; and Scott Ogden, Tatsuki Suzuki, and Taiyo Furusato all received warnings, and all for the same offence of riding slowly on the line.

Below, the first table shows the result of qualifying, and the second table shows the starting order for the Moto3 German Grand Prix after the pit lane start penalties are applied.

Adrian Fernandez was fastest in Moto3 P2 at the Sachsenring, with his 1:25.053 marking a new lap record for the Moto3 class at the German venue.

Fernandez led a Honda 1-2-3 in P2, ahead of Luca Lunetta and Angel Piqueras. Collin Veijer was the fastest KTM rider in fourth, ahead of championship leader David Alonso in fifth.

Jose Antonio Rueda was sixth, ahead of Tatsuki Suzuki, Jacob Roulstone, David Munoz, and Ryusei Yamanaka, who completed the top 10.

It was an especially messy end to the session, which meant that the top 14 in it are not the top 14 going straight to Q2, despite it being dry. Joel Kelso, Taiyo Furusato, Ivan Ortola, and Stefano Nepa all made it into the top 14 on their P1 times from Friday afternoon, meaning that Joel Esteban and Matteo Bertelle missed out on Q2 despite finishing P2 in the top 14.
