Angel Piqueras goes from taking a double-long lap penalty to winning the San Marino Moto3 Grand Prix.
On Saturday it was David Alonso who took pole position yet again in Moto3. However, on Sunday it was very different for the Colombian in the race.
For the first time in the 2024 Moto3 season Honda has won a Grand Prix. Angel Piqueras won his first-ever Moto3 race in his rookie season at the age of 17. The Leopard Racing rider took two long lap penalties but stormed through to secure victory.
Daniel Holgado is not out of the Moto3 title hunt yet as he is 70 points behind Alonso. A second place at Misano will help the Spaniard's chances of staying in the title chase.
In third place was another Spaniard, Ivan Ortola, who claimed his first podium since his win in Silverstone. The MT Helmets - MSi rider has also kept his slim Championship hopes alive.
Taiyo Furusato missed out on his third podium of the season as he finished in fourth place at Misano. The Japanese rider battled hard against the Spaniards but narrowly missed a trip to the rostrum.
On the last lap, Collin Veijer made up a position from sixth to fifth as he passed Alonso. Just behind Veijer ended up being Joel Kelso as he was given sixth place after a penalty for Alonso who was in sixth.
Alonso, who is headed for Moto2 in 2025, dropped down the order on the last lap to seventh place. The Moto3 Championship leader looked rattled for the first time this season.
Tatsuki Suzuki put together an incredible ride that went under the radar as he came up from 23rd on the grid to eighth place.
Completing the top ten was the SIC58 Squadra Corsa riders in ninth and tenth places. Luca Lunetta was given a double long lap penalty and still went on to finish in ninth. Then there was Filippo Farioli in tenth place.
Scott Ogden was in 15th place as he claimed the last point on offer in the Moto3 race.
