Marc Marquez suffered a massive crash during the opening session but was back on track moments later. The King of COTA ended the morning session in third place on the factory Ducati.

The top Honda rider was once again Johann Zarco on the LCR Honda Castrol machine. The French rider led part of the session but was in fourth place when the chequered flag was shown.

Pedro Acosta put the KTM into fifth place in the wet conditions on the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing RC16.

Francesco Bagnaia could not match his factory teammate but had a promising Friday morning in the wet. The Italian ended the opening session in sixth place and looked more competitive than he did in Thailand and Argentina on Friday morning.

Alex Marquez ended the morning in seventh place on the BK8 Gresini Racing MotoGP Ducati GP24.

Two more KTM riders were in eighth and ninth places, with Maverick Vinales in eighth and Brad Binder in ninth.

MotoGP replacement rider Augusto Fernandez ended his first official session back as a MotoGP rider in tenth place on the Prima Pramac Racing Yamaha.
