MotoGP Australia, Sprint Race Results (Updated): Martin dominates the field on Saturday, Bagnaia off the podium

Gold and Goose

Jorge Martin extends his Championship lead as he dominates Saturday at Phillip Island, with Francesco Bagnaia off the podium.

The 2024 MotoGP World Championship has four rounds left with Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia continuing to battle for the crown.

In the Australian Sprint Race, Jorge Martin dominated the opening race of the weekend. The Spaniard was untouchable as he dropped the field and managed his gap at the front.

Second place was the Gresini Racing MotoGP rider, Marc Marquez. The Spaniard was closing in on Martin in the latter laps of the race but did a good job of charging through from eighth to second.

Rounding out the rostrum was Enea Bastianini on the factory Ducati. The Italian rider was over four seconds behind Martin but picked up crucial points from the Saturday Sprint.

Off the podium and nearly seven seconds behind Martin was Francesco Bagnaia in fourth place. The two-time World Champion had nothing for his title rival as he slipped back throughout the race.

Prima Pramac Racing rider, Franco Morbidelli, continues his top form at the end of the 2024 season. Morbidelli ended up inheriting fifth place after another rider got a tyre pressure penalty.

The top Aprilia rider on Saturday at Phillip Island was Raul Fernandez in sixth place. The Trackhouse Racing rider came through Qualifying One and held his ground in a race of attrition.

The Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team rider, Fabio di Giannantonio, was relegated from fifth place to seventh after a tyre pressure penalty in the Australian Grand Prix Sprint Race.

Behind the satellite Trackhouse Racing Aprilia was the full factory Aprilia rider of Aleix Espargaro. The Spaniard has struggled in the latter stages of the season but like Fernandez withstood the race of attrition.

The only KTM rider to finish the Australian Sprint Race was Augusto Fernandez. The GasGas Factory Racing Tech3 rider was in the final points-scoring position as he finished in ninth place.
