Valencia Moto2, Qualifying: Canet leaves it late to deny Aldeguer, Lowes fifth for finale

Gold & Goose

Aron Canet gave Pons Racing a fine parting gift ahead of the team’s exit from the grand prix paddock by claiming pole position for both its swansong event and the 2023 Moto2 season finale in Valencia.

The Spaniard left it late to snatch the top spot after the flag had fallen, demoting Fermin Aldeguer from the top spot in the process.

A third pole position of the season for Canet on the Pons Wegow Racing machine, as well as assuring the Spaniard stalwarts at least one more credit for its final statistics in the grand prix ranks, it gives Canet another chance to land that elusive maiden Moto2 win.

Winner in each of the last three events, Aldeguer is well placed to complete a stunning end to the 2023 Moto2 season by making it four-in-a-row on the Speed Up Racing.

Completing an all-Spanish front row is Marcos Ramirez, who helped to once again vindicate American Racing’s decision to snap him up for the 2024 Moto2 season by claiming third on the grid.

On row two, Jake Dixon measures up to ‘bronze medal’ rival Aldeguer from fourth place, ahead of Sam Lowes, who gets his Moto2 farewell race underway from fifth.

Champion Pedro Acosta completes row two in sixth, ahead of Joe Roberts, Filip Salac and Albert Arenas, with Somkiat Chantra completing the top ten.
