Alonso Lopez kept his name at the head of the timesheets in Portimao to hold the overnight advantage following Practice 1 for the Portuguese Moto2.

The Spaniard, who kicked off his 2024 Moto2 title campaign with victory in the Qatar Moto2 opener on the Speed Up Racing Boscoscuro, was in fine form again around the undulating Algarve venue to turn in a timesheet topping benchmark of 1m 42.362secs during P1.

It was enough to earn him a slender -0.013s margin over countryman Aron Canet, who once again proved formidable over a single lap on the Fantic Racing Kalex to leap into the upper echelons during the final minutes of the session.

In third place, Joe Roberts demonstrated more of the form that had him tipped as a potential title contender during pre-season testing, the American Racing rider two tenths down on Lopez at the venue that heralded his maiden Moto2 win in 2022.

FP1 pace setter Manuel Gonzalez ended his day in fourth place, while Marcos Ramirez made it a double boost for American Racing by joining Roberts inside the top five.

In sixth place, Fermin Aldeguer put the fanfare around his newly-announced 2025 MotoGP deal with Ducati behind him to get himself in the mix, the Speed Up Racing rider heading up Jake Dixon, who shrugged off any ill-effects from the huge crash that forced his withdrawal in Qatar a fortnight ago by going seventh fastest.
