Aron Canet secured his second pole position of the 2024 Moto2 World Championship season after spearing to the top of the timesheets late on with his final effort to deny Fermin Aldeguer in qualifying for the Grand Prix of The Americas.
Quickest in Practice 1 and Practice 2, Aldeguer came into qualifying as the favourite to convert his pace into a first pole position of the season at Circuit of The Americas.
It was an objective that looked sewn up coming into the final stages after the Speed Up Racing rider leapt to the head of the leaderboard with a 2m 07.740secs lap.
However, any celebrations would prove premature after Canet was once again able to rely on his reputation for turning in quick single laps when it matters by bettering his countryman's time with a 2m 07.631s effort.
A second pole of the season to go with his similar achievement in Qatar, it comes after a maiden Moto2 victory last time out in Portugal lifted him into the lead of the standings after two events.
With Spaniards locking out the top four positions, Sergio Garcia completed the front row on the MT Helmets-MSI Boscoscuro, holding off a big late improvement from Albert Arenas on the QJMotor Gresini Kalex.
In fifth and sixth, local hero Joe Roberts and team-mate Marcos Ramirez gave COTA fans something to cheer by firming their positions on the second row for the American Racing team.
Dennis Foggia heads up row three for Italtrans, which he will share with Alonso Lopez in eighth on the second of the Speed Up Boscoscuros and Pertamina GasUp/SAG rider Bo Bendsneyder - a podium winner in Austin a year ago - in ninth.
Despite a crash, Tony Arbolino got back on track to secure tenth, while Jake Dixon struggled to call upon the pace that had him up inside the top three during P2, leaving the CFMoto Aspar Team rider down in 14th for what will be his first start of an injury-interrupted season.
